What is video surveillance (CCTV) and why would you want
it?
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, to a limited set of monitors.
It differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted.
Lately, the price of video cameras has become quite affordable to just about anyone. Tied together with a digital video recorder, homeowners and small business owners can help protect their property and deter theft in most cases.
For those with high speed internet connections, you can use web-based cameras, some with with pan/tilt/zoom capability that you can control from anywhere in the world with a computer on the internet. Plus most recorders can send email alerts with pics of the captured event. Captured images can also be uploaded to a webpage that can be viewed at any time, almost in real time.
When coupled with an alarm system, you have the ultimate security tool. When an alarm is activated or when your cameras detect motion outside your house or business, you can get an alert to your pager, cell phone or email. Then simply go online and check out your cameras to see if the threat is real.
Yes, as long as the video you are monitoring does not violate another persons right to privacy
(that means no pointing it at the neighbors windows!).
You have the right to protect your property and your family.
So what is better, wired or wireless cameras?
Wired cameras will be give you a more private and better picture, since most wireless cameras run at 2.4ghz (the same as wireless routers and some wireless phones) the chances of interference from your own equipment or your neighbors is really high. Wireless cameras are more prone to interference from microwave transmissions as well. Plus wireless cameras can be viewed by anyone with the right receiver, even from 50-100 yards away.
For security installations, I always go with wired.
For baby monitors or nanny cams, I go with wireless.
